Gallbladder removal or cholecystectomy is a surgical process to remove the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ that is used to collect and store bile which is a digestive fluid produced by the liver. Gallbladder removal is a common surgery and an outpatient procedure.

Gallbladder surgery can be performed by two methods

  • Open cholecystectomy
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

A large incision is made to remove the gallbladder in open cholecystectomy and several tiny incisions are made in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy also uses a tiny camera and special surgical tools to perform surgery. A gallbladder surgery is recommended when a person has

  • Choledocholithiasis or Gallstones in the bile duct
  • Cholelithiasis or Gallstones in the gallbladder
  • Cholecystitis or Inflammation in gallbladder
  • Pancreatitis or Inflammation in pancreas due to gallstones
  • Biliary dyskinesia

The physician will only recommend gallbladder removal when a person’s gallbladder is causing the acute problem or need a prolonged concern. The symptoms which show need of gallbladder removal are

  • Severe pain in the upper abdomen
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Bloating
  • Jaundice (yellow skin)

The gallbladder removal can have several risk factors such as blood clots, allergic reactions, bleeding, infection, and injury to the bile duct or damage to blood vessels.Recovery from the surgery depends on the type of the surgery. In laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the patient is able to go home same day of the surgery. The patient may able to eat and drink without pain and can walk slowly. It needs a week to fully recover. Open cholecystectomy needs 2-3 days of hospitalization to recover and at home; it may take 4-6 weeks to recover fully. Gallbladder removal is the only way to restrict development of gallstones as dietary modifications or medication cannot able to stop gallstones to re-occur.
